We are aware that this tasting note starts with a lyrical ‘over the top’ bias statement; Central Otago’s beauty is captured in this HAWKSHEAD 2022 Pinot Blanc.
This wine is highly aromatic and OFF DRY in style. The nose detects a promise of fresh, crisp apple and pear aromas and those flow smoothly onto the palate. The discovery of an additional enticing hint of sweet spice and a zesty note of lemon elevates the wine to a more seriously detailed depth. Fine texture and balanced acidity combined with perfect fruit sweetness lead to a mouth-filling finish. This Pinot Blanc will get your attention without demanding it.
The 2022 HAWKSHEAD Pinot Blanc is best enjoyed cool, not ice cold, around 15 *C.
Try it and let us know if you agree with our rather waxing lyrical about the wine.

18.5/20pts, (94pts) Gold Medal, Perfect to Outstanding
Bright, even, pale yellow. The nose is pure with a good depth of stonefruit, apple and citrus zest aromas entwined with floral, cream and spice. Medium-bodied, peach, apple, and lemon zest aromas have an elegant core adorned by floral, white pepper and nutmeg. The refined mouthfeel is fine-textured and creamy, carrying spice throughout with refreshing acidity. This Pinot Blanc is refined and textural shows purity and a fine acid line. Match with pork dumplings and steamed fish over the next 3-5 years. Fruit from Cromwell basin, whole bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeast, rested on lees for 4 months in 70% stainless steel, 30% older French barriques, 13.5% alc, 5 g/l RS. Vegan friendly.

4.5 Stars, Outstanding quality (gold medal standard)
The youthful 2022 vintage (4.5*) is a single-vineyard wine, grown in the Cromwell Basin. It was mostly (70 per cent) fermented and matured on its yeast lees for four months in stainless steel tanks; 30 per cent of the blend was handled in seasoned French oak barriques. Light lemon/green, it is full-bodied, with fresh, ripe peach, pear and lychee flavours, showing good intensity, a distinct touch of complexity, balanced acidity and a dryish (5 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. Best drinking 2024+.

94p/ 100 Outstanding quality showing varietal purity and exemplifying regional type.
Elegant and poised, the wine shows apricot, rockmelon, fig and oatmeal aromas on the nose, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate displaying richly textured mouthfeel backed by beautifully pitched acidity, finishing persistent and creamy. At its best: now to 2028. www.hawksheadwine.com. Feb 2023.
